Excitement is Building

Posted 14 June, 2010, at 01:54PM by Vanessa Lowry

The excitement is building for the 5th Annual Roswell-tree! We have more sponsors, expect more participants and “The Committee” has some surprises planned to make this event more fun than ever.

We are going Global with our new Virtual Win category. While we love having participants celebrating at Roswell Park with us on race day, now participants can win even if they are traveling. We’ve received entry applications for anticipated winners in NY, FL, MA and more. (We don’t know for sure about the global, but international travelers are welcome to join us.)

Check back for training tips from our sponsors.

Spread the word. Bring your family. Share the fun!

Santa Claus is coming to Roswell!

Posted 16 May, 2009, at 09:50AM by Vanessa Lowry

Vanessa: I heard that Santa will be vacationing in Atlanta during the week of the Roswell-tree.
Sally: I have it from a good source that the Atlanta Community Food Bank is on Santa’s especially nice list. Do you think we can get him to come kick off the Roswell-tree this year?
Vanessa: I just messaged him. Santa says to let everyone know, “You better be nice because Santa Claus is coming to Roswell on July 4th!”
Sally: That is fantastic! But, won’t he be kind of hot in his suit?
Vanessa: He told me he has a summer vacation suit that he will wear. Of course, Santa is always HOT!
Sally: I agree, a man bringing presents is HOT! I’ll be sure to let him know that our Roswell-tree participants all belong on his “nice” list! I think he is adequately experienced to give out the tees, tiaras and tops as the winners finish their race.
Vanessa: Perfect! The Roswell-tree is just getting bigger and better.

Winning Tee-Shirt Design for 2009

Posted 23 April, 2009, at 08:39AM by Vanessa Lowry

Vanessa: What do you think of the new tee-shirt design?
Sally: It is absolutely awesome! The competition was tough, but you win again!
Vanessa: I am so proud to be the winner.
Sally: You should be proud – you did a great job. This tee-shirt design is so much better and more exclusive than the “Peach-shrub” shirt!
Vanessa: Should we keep the design a secret like the Shrub does?
Sally: No, let’s show off your good work to the RT-4 participant want-to-be’s. They might need the inspiration to begin training.

Tees, Tiaras & Tops

Posted 21 April, 2009, at 11:38AM by Vanessa Lowry

Vanessa: Hey Sally, what about the bling this year? We had medals last year.
Sally: The medals were awesome. It is all about the jewelry. This year we should really set ourselves apart from other races. What about tiaras?
Vanessa: I love it! That fits our goddess-like style perfectly. What about the guys? Shall we duct-tape two tiaras together to create a crown?
Sally: I’m not sure they will go for that. How about Roswell-tree baseball caps?
Vanessa: Well, okay if we want to be fancy. We can keep with the “T” theme and call them tops.
Sally: We’ve got another winner!

The Committee: The theme for 2009 – Tees, Tiaras and Tops! (music swells in the background)

Over $16,000 in Groceries as the result of the 2008 Roswell-tree

Posted 09 April, 2009, at 03:43PM by Vanessa Lowry

Vanessa: I had so much fun at the 3rd Annual Roswell-tree. We sure know some great people!

Sally: I think everyone had a great time. Even a week after ACL surgery I managed to win my division! This year, I plan to be more coherent, in less pain and actually step across the finish line.

Vanessa: It is important to set goals. We had 50 participants last year and raised $2,000 for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. That equates to over $16,000 in groceries! (The Food Bank can leverage every dollar donated to provide $8.28 worth of groceries for a hungry family.)

Sally: We were successful due to our sponsors’ donations which ensured all race fees went directly to the Food Bank.

Vanessa: Let’s set a goal to have 100 participants this year. With J. Christopher’s as our sponsor again I know we’ll have cool tee-shirts and a great breakfast.

Sally: I’m all for it. I love breakfast. Also, we have Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy as our new media sponsor. Rumor has it they may show up the day of the race to announce the winners. Won’t that be fun!

Vanessa: I’m really excited, the weather is just right to start training.

33 Days until Race Day!

Posted 02 June, 2008, at 11:14AM by Vanessa Lowry

Sally: What great weather today – one of the reasons I love Atlanta. The warmth is perfect for ramping up training for the Roswell-tree. I’ve been walking at the park and feel left out that I don’t have a dog to train with. Maybe I’ll visit our friend Mimi at That Dirty Dog and borrow one of her dogs out for my walk today. I know Wheatie, Bella and Tigger will be clean and looking good!

Vanessa: It is fun to see all the dogs at the park! A lot of folks combine their training with other activities they need to do, like walking their dogs. Others delegate things out of their schedule to make time to train. One friend decided to get his house cleaned by House Cleaning On Wheels and take those extra hours to walk outside and enjoy the sunshine. Training never felt so good!?

Sally: Great idea – I like a clean house but prefer not to do it myself. Hey, we better get going. We can brainstorm ideas while we walk and plan more Roswell-tree events. It will be fun to have even more participants this year and help hungry families via the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Vanessa: I’m really looking forward to the Roswell-tree 3 – it is already a great adventure. Race you to J. Christopher’s then back to the park!?

Post how you make time to train…

44 Days until Race Day!

Posted 22 May, 2008, at 08:27AM by Vanessa Lowry

Vanessa: Sally, should we stretch before we start training today?

Sally: Hmmm, we aren’t planning on going that fast at the start are we? Actually, I read you should only stretch after you have gotten moving for at least 5 minutes, giving your muscles time to warm up before stretching them.

Vanessa: I’ve heard that too. We certainly don’t want to break one of the Roswell-tree rules by injuring ourselves during training! Stretching after you run or walk is a good idea too. Any other tips to help get started training safely?

Sally: If someone hasn’t been active in a while, they probably should see their doctor for a check up and then their chiropractor to make sure they are in alignment. After that it is about starting slowly, listening to your body (if it hurts – stop) and gradually increasing the mileage. We need to make sure we are drinking lots of water too – isn’t that your specialty?

Vanessa: I’m big on drinking water – staying hydrated, especially in the summer, is a challenge I take seriously! The weather has been so wonderful, I’ve found myself taking two walks a day. I’m motivated!

Post your best training tip…

55 Days until Race Day!

Posted 10 May, 2008, at 02:32PM by Vanessa Lowry

Sally: Welcome to the Roswell-tree training blog! We are excited to add an additional fun way to train (or talk about training) for the big event.

My goals for this year’s Roswell-tree include completing the 10k and winning my division, having a lot of fun with good friends and colleagues, and raising money for the Atlanta Community Food Bank! I just love the win/win/win approach!

Vanessa: I love to win! I’ve already picked out my winning division for this year! Let’s get started by going to breakfast at J.Christopher’s. We’ll need the energy to get our first workout done.

Sally: What a great idea. We can walk up to J. Christopher’s and count the trip as part of our training mileage!

Post your favorite training breakfast (pre or post workout).
